How to Spot Genuine OEM Porsche 911 Parts
The Porsche 911 is one of the most reproduced cars in the world when it comes to parts. From emblems and trim to complex mechanical components, the aftermarket replica market is huge. If you are restoring or maintaining a classic 911, knowing how to tell genuine from aftermarket saves you money and — more importantly — preserves resale value.
Four signs a Porsche part is genuine
- Engraved Porsche part number: genuine parts carry the Porsche part number embossed or laser-etched, never just printed. The typography is consistent and professional.
- Metal finish and weight: Porsche has always specified particular alloys with specific weight and density. A replica usually feels either “too light” or “too heavy” by hand.
- Fixing system: the mounts, threads and clips on genuine parts fit without play or over-tightening. If you have to force the fit, it is most likely a replica.
- Packaging and documentation: Porsche ships its spares in boxes printed with the Porsche AG barcode, a part-number label and instructions where applicable.
Emblems and trim: collector territory
911 emblems are one of the areas where you see the most replicas in circulation: bonnet badges, side shields, chrome lettering. Genuine items have crisp relief, uniform enamel and a specific clip or pin fixing. Replicas tend to use adhesive, have a different weight and — crucially — age differently: factory-grade chrome holds its shine for decades; replica chrome pits within a few years.
Mechanical components: engine, gearbox, brakes
For serious mechanical parts (cases, heads, clutch, synchros) the only reliable way to verify authenticity is to cross-check the part number against the Porsche OEM catalogue and confirm date of manufacture. A part fitted to a 1985 car but marked “made in” after that date is suspect by default.
Why it matters for the value of your 911
A Porsche 911 with original parts retains its appraised value; a 911 with aftermarket components loses between 15% and 30% depending on the model and era. For concours cars or serious collector pieces, traceability of every component is critical. Keeping the car factory-correct also makes it easier to obtain historic registration.
