Steel crankshaft Engine Morgan 4/4 1966-1968

Material:

Farndon’s steel supplier is Corus. Corus is one of the world’s leading producers of alloy and aerospace steels. The material is manufactured to the highest standards of cleanliness and quality, exceeding the minimum requirements of British Standards.

Their experience over many years has shown that Corus material is the most suitable for the crankshaft manufacturer. The cleanliness means rejects due to steel defects are minimal. Ultrasonic examination is carried out on the rolled bar after heat treatment to ensure there are no cracks.

The sulphur content is controlled to provide good machinability and minimise the risks of sulphides causing problems with finished components.

We believe this contributes significantly to producing high-quality crankshafts.

Heat treatment:

All Farndon crankshafts receive heat treatment to increase the core strength of the crankshaft. The procedure we use depends on the engine application.

Nitriding:

Crankshafts are nitrided for 72 hours (unless the customer states otherwise). This procedure gives the crankshaft a case depth of 0.5 mm to 0.6 mm minimum and a minimum hardness of 750 HV. The benefit of this is to give the crankshaft a much harder wearing surface.

All Farndon EN40B steel crankshafts are manufactured from solid steel billet. Farndon can also make any one-off crankshaft. Please ask if your application is not on the list.
